Welcome to the National Archives of Composition and Rhetoric

The National Archive of Composition and Rhetoric is a joint project of four New England land grant institutions (University of Rhode Island, University of New Hampshire, University of Massachusetts Amherst, and the University of Connecticut) and representatives of the publishing industry and other academic institutions. Printed books in the collection are at the University of New Hampshire. Papers and other archival materials from scholars, publishers, and composition programs are at the University of Rhode Island.

Among the scholars who have donated materials to the papers collection are Richard Beal, Ross Winterowd, Elaine Maimon, Alan Purves, Kenneth Bruffee, and Wayne Booth.

What We Do

Dr. Robert A. Schwegler, Professor of the College Writing Program at University of Rhode Island, directs the NACR's acquisition of file-based materials. He can be reached at 401-874-2979 or by e-mail at rschweg@aol.com.

Textbooks are collected by NACR's major partner, the University of New Hampshire's Department of English which is home to the Richard Beal  Collection. The collection currently has 3,638 volumes (as of 1 February 2008). Access the special collection through the UNH online library catalog. (Use the  key words "National Archive of Composition and Rhetoric" and the list of 3,638 titles will be accessed.) Each year, new or out- of-print texts are being added each to the collection, and in many cases, each edition of a specific title is part of the holdings. Additionally, NACR's UNH-based text collection contains many rare and aged books from the personal collection of Robert J. Connors.
